![]() ![]() The Game Specific Rulebook is quite barebones, but I generally don't like to prefill it with much, particularly the opposing sides' specific rules until formal playtesting because that is when things really shake out and require game specific rules to guide the game along historical and chromey needs. That was really difficult to put together given the dearth of information (recall my carping about the lack of information on German infantry divisions here. I got it to the point where I have the campaign set up and Order of Arrival. I did make progress on BCS The Breaking Point, my design on France (and Belgium) 1940. For now, BCS Velikiye Luki is on the back burner and Jim Daniels' needs to bless it to formally submit it. ![]() Little things that are being done in Kalach like how the Soviets are organized and rules governing them may work their way into Velikiye Luki as Dean is thinking about it. There's likely rework on the Order of Battle to clean up the formations. I made a lot of progress on the map in 2022 and early 2023 to the point where I think it's done. ![]() Jim Daniel's BCS Velikiye Luki didn't make any progress in terms of design, but it's still out there in a pending state. Other games that I listed in my wishlist to work on in 2023 didn't pan out. We're trying not to change the design on a whim, there's a specific thing we're looking to do and Joe and I are keeping our eyes on the historical progress compared to how and what the game units are or could do. Playtesting can be a pain in the ass, with rules changes then restarts, more rules and other changes causing more restarts, and so on. I note that the 24th Panzer Division made progress in the south that's cutting out an MSR route that loops back north and wondered to Joe if that's what's causing the heartache among the Soviets. Joe correctly pointed out that a lot of Soviet formations can't establish MSRs, so the Soviets are nearing collapse about 4 turns into the playtest. The German Panzer and Motorized formations penetrated as they should and caused some loose pockets among the Soviets. The latest update that Joe sent me on the Kalach playtest looked good from my initial scan of the situation. Joe Linder, Herman Wu, Jim Pyle, and I are helping Dean guide through the rules changes and proofreading, but it'll take time and admittedly, longer to get things worked through than before. It's a wonder because I have only read that recovery from a stroke can take a while, but Dean is still sending email updates with updates on Kalach and Chir. Likely following Winter Offensive when the MMP heads meet to discuss the year ahead we'll get an update on that.Īs for Dean, he's still powering through to trying to get BCS Kalach/Chir done. Bottom line is that No Turning Back will eventually be on pre-order. Plus there's likely discussion on this between Dean and MMP. And to be frank, putting any final touches for No Turning Back shouldn't just be handed off to some other person to finish up. So apologies to many where I have teased with "No Turning Back is soon" or that it was still planned for 2023. The man has better things to worry about like his health. I don't know the exact reason why and I'm not just about to press Dean about it either. No Turning Back, which had been slated to be on pre-order in 2023 didn't. I mean, projects that I helped on or design - Ardennes II, Goose Green, and most of all, Valley of Tears (my unashamed baby), were all published. I mean, I was promising to accomplish a lot in 2023. ![]() I think back to how zealous I was last year (for reference, see my post exactly a year ago: New Year, New Opportunities? A hopeful outlook to 2023). Nothing like the creature comforts (and cleanliness) of home. I think it's more allergies from a dust mites staying in the rental house. I stayed up to midnight but doing random things (ok, wargame things) when I heard fireworks going off to realize that it was 12am.Īm I a dullard? Perhaps, but I'm nursing some weird snuffy, runny nose that I got while on vacation. But hey, they were troopers and we had fun. No reason to push the kids (the little one is 5) only to have them celebrate something they'll be super groggy about then try getting them back to a regular schedule the day after. My family went to a New Year's Eve party where the kids stayed up past their bedtime. Typically I don't rein in the New Year with much fanfare. ![]()
